In Europe, about 10% of fungi are threatened with extinction (Kew, 2020). In North America, no one can say, because no one has built the baseline. FUNDIS is the only nonprofit focused on North America's fungal biodiversity and conservation, and we're counting, with community scientists like you.
Your gift funds the Rare Fungi Challenges, the Fungal Diversity Database, DNA sequencing, and the Sequence Validation Corps: the work that turns mushroom sightings into evidence for conservation.

Message from the Director
“If a species isn’t on the right map, a new development can go right over it without anyone realizing it was there.”
For the past decade I’ve worked in conservation in Pennsylvania, translating data on rare and endangered species into the maps that guide land-use planning. Good data, properly documented and shared, can be the difference between protection and loss.
That’s what excites me about FUNDIS. Our volunteers are collecting remarkable data on rare fungi across North America, and we’re working to turn it into conservation assessments, IUCN Red List support, and alignment with systems like NatureServe, so fungi are finally part of the plans that decide what gets protected.
We often ask whether a species is truly rare or just under-surveyed. FUNDIS helps answer that. This year we’re asking for your help to raise $30,000 by December 31 so we can keep going.
