Gourmet fungi cultivation led Jaren to an appreciation of wild species identification. His most impactful fungi experience was going to southern Brazil in the Atlantic forest where he participated in a fungal survey in one of the world’s bioluminescent fungi hotspots. The Central Valley of California is Jaren’s homeland, just about the opposite of Brazil, but since working with FUNDIS, he has been persistent about uncovering the fungal diversity of the world’s greatest agricultural center. He has helped establish several species in CA that were not considered present, and it’s a powerful conviction of naturalistic desires that continues to usher Jaren joyfully to his next survey.
