Michael Heim

Michael Heim is a forager, cultivator, and educator based in Lafayette, Colorado, where he founded Ensō Farm and Forage in 2015. He is a Certified Wild Mushroom Expert credentialed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, one of a small number of individuals in the state authorized to identify and approve wild mushrooms for commercial culinary use.

Michael served as president of the Colorado Mycological Society (CMS) in 2018 and remained on its board through 2019. He stays active with CMS today through its microscopy sub-group, and has volunteered at the Sam Mitchell Herbarium of Fungi at the Denver Botanic Gardens alongside curators Vera Evenson-Stuckey and Andrew Wilson. In 2024 he authored the polypore chapter of Foraging Mushrooms of the Rocky Mountains (CMS and Pikes Peak Mycological Society). He has led educational workshops and forays at the Telluride, Eagle, and Santa Cruz Mountain mushroom festivals, and taught for the Denver Botanic Gardens, Escoffier Culinary Institute, and Chefs Collaborative, among others.

Michael helped launch MycoReach, a nonprofit dedicated to open-source mycology and citizen science; its mobile mushroom lab, outfitted to bring the lab into the field, is a true anchor for community-driven science. He joined the FUNDiS board in 2026.
